I Did Not Break The Rules

I started out by breaking my pen,
I could not write anymore yet I had a lot to tell,
I had nothing nevertheless I wanted to sell,
English was empty of words so I wrote this in French,
But because you are my favorite I just had to translate,
This piece is not that super,
I did not put the commas,
I could not think of any style
All I did was just write,
Even if they liked it when the end rhymed,
They wanted something flawless,
Similar to old wine to quench their sorrows,
Something fine so that the lines could flow,
Just like water from high to low,
Just like a poem from top to bottom,
I had none like that so smooth,
All in all this is the only way I can prove,
That I did not break the rules,

My stanzas were not the same,
They kept changing as the content changed,
Perhaps I was new to this game,
Perhaps I did not belong in this arena,
But I kept fighting hard like a Gladiator,
Spilling ink like they did spill blood,
When I felt weary I used the other hand
and all I did was just write,
Spilling the contents from my heart,
Covering the distances in-between the lines,
Trying to show them I did not break the rules,

Times have changed to the best,
When you are a poet nowadays,
You don’t play by the book,
You don’t have to cramp pieces of paper
You don’t have to use eccentric words
You don’t have to write letters out of the alphabets,
You don’t have to feel like you are different
You don’t have to feel very talented
You don’t have to think like a genius
All you need is some space to write,
All you need is a reason to write,
All you need is a season to write,
All you need is a hand to write,
All you need is sweet and kind words,
To cover this great verse,
all this time I did not break the rules

Times have changed to the best,
When you are a poet nowadays,
You don’t have to narrate what you write,
You don’t have to cram up all this verse,
It will always be there on the internet,
These days they have poetry nights,
In a distance I watch these events with interest,
They are a place where few of our kind shine,
And majority of their kind go to hide,
Hoping that when you get there,
All they will do is just to stare,
While you are on that stage,
Shoving the microphone to their face
When you want to recite,
The fire in your audience you must ignite,
Hold the microphone close to your mouth,
Till the last of your line drops,
Then tell them I did not break the rules,

I did not put this to entertain you,
I did not put this to educate you,
I did not put this to intimidate you,
I did not put this to challenge you,
I did not put this to surprise you
I did not put this to empathize with you,
No I did put this to break the rules,
I put this to motivate you,
I put this to infiltrate you,
I put this to share with you,
I put this to play with you,
I put this to read with you,
But I did not break the rules.

  1. I did not break them
    The rules are drawn down,
    Some are in our hearts
Some we contemplate them every time,
Yet others we live them now and then.
But I did not break them
